GOV at Capital Pride

Capital Pride’s request to the Ottawa Police to refrain from wearing their uniforms in this year’s Pride Parade has generated a great deal of discussion about the role of Pride and Police within our community, including among our members.

GOV is a volunteer, non-profit volleyball league catered mainly to the lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender, queer, and LGBTQ-friendly within the National Capital Region (NCR). The league provides an inclusive and fun environment, but also serves as a healthy social venue for the LGBTQ community in the NCR. GOV’s participation in the Pride Parade each year, along with several other community events, is intended to reach out and let the public know that this space exists in their region.

It is in this spirit that the GOV Board has chosen to continue to celebrate GOV’s visibility and positive contribution to Ottawa’s LGBTQ+ community by maintaining a float in the Pride Parade. The GOV Board respects that its members have a range of views and perspectives about Capital Pride’s decision, and encourages all of its members to educate themselves on the issues at hand, engage in respectful discussion, and decide for themselves how they want to participate in Capital Pride events this year. As always, members who want to join us on Pride day are welcome! We understand if some members choose not to take part in the parade.

We sincerely hope that Pride will effectively resolve the issues it is currently facing and that our community will continue to support them in bringing Ottawa’s LGBTQ+ community together for the benefit of us all.
